HTTP and HTTPS

Designed by Netscape, http or Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a system used to pass information found in the internet back and forth between clients and servers.  The browser acts as the client, sending a request to the website server, asking to load the page.  Http is otherwise not encrypted and so can be used to perform basic web browsing functions, such as searching for images. Other online activities require an encrypted page, which will protect you and your personal data from being looked at, hence Https.

Like http, https transmits and receives information through the internet, but with secure code or language.  Http works in conjunction with SSL (Secure Socket Layer) to form https or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, a secure system that helps transmit data securely over the internet.  In order for a https connection to be enabled, a server must be verified by third party through the use of key certificates.  These certificates indicate that the site is secure and may be authenticated for use.  This helps prevent unwanted privacy infiltrations and online scams.  For example: if you log onto your bank account online, you can see that the website is secure because there is an 's' after http.  When you enter your sensitive information (username and password), no one will be able to see it because is secure.  When making purchases online, accessing email accounts, social networking, or accessing any other sites that require sensitive data, be sure the website is secure.
