Business Intelligence Systems



  •  Business intelligence (BI) is a computer-based techniques, which dig out, spot, and analyze detailed business data. We can use BI in database and application technologies, analysis practices. Sometimes used synonymously with decision support, even though business intelligence is much broader technique, possibly including knowledge management, enterprise resource planning, and data mining, among other practices.
  • Business intelligence systems (BIS) are an interaction based on computer architecture and subsystems intended to help decision makers use communications technologies, data, documents, knowledge, and analytical models to identify and address the problem. BIS process, store, and provide useful information for users.

Why Business Intelligence is needed
  • Computer collects and stores big amounts of data. The generation of all these data has much to do with Moore's Law: "the capacity of storage devices increases as their costs decrease." As a result, the current storage is unlimited and free. 

Business Intelligence Components

  • Data management includes data warehouse, data mart, and ETL. First, data warehouse is the collection of data extracted from various operational systems transformed to make the data consistent, and loaded for analysis. Traditional databases include data management and transaction processing. There are two exceptions for data analysis and decision support, such as performance and heterogeneity. According to Wikipedia, "Data mart is the access layer of the data warehouse environment that is used to get data out to the users. Extract, transform and load (ETL) is a process in database usage."

  • Applications and tools include query, OLAP, and data mining. Query is based on simple and direct queries. Query involves simple analysis and data conversion, such as calculations, sorting, filtering, grouping, and formatting. Online analytical processing (OLAP) is used in averaging, counting , summing, and performing arithmetical operations on different data sets. OLAP's report is easily changed online. 

    There are measures and dimensions in OLAP report. 

    Data mining technique is a combination of statistics and mathematics, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. There are two types of data mining: unsupervised and supervised data mining.  Unsupervised data mining doesn't create a model or hypothesis before running the analysis. They apply data mining techniques to the data, observe the results, and generate hypotheses after analysis to explain the pattern found. However, supervised data mining improve a model before analyzing  and applying statistical techniques to data to estimate parameters of the model. According to business dictionary,"decision tree is type of tree diagram used in determining the optimum course of action, in situations having several possible alternatives with uncertain outcomes." Decision tree analyses are an unsupervised data-mining technique
  • Business Intelligence reporting and delivery are reporting, dashboard, user interface, and information visualization. Reporting reads, processes, and formats the data into structured reports that are delivered to users. Based on Wikipedia, "dashboard is a page at the front of the control panel for a website content management system. User interface is the space where interaction between humans and machines occurs." Information visualization is the communication of abstraction through using the interactive visual interfaces.

  • Application domains are business performance and CRM. Business performance management is a set of process management and analysis for performance management of an organization to achieve one or more pre-selected targets. Communication Resource Manager (CRM) is a process that connects with the SNA network and directly communicates with the PU2.1 server.

  • Business intelligence software analyzes business data to know the strengths and weaknesses of an organization. Business intelligence software allows the management of organization to see the relationship between data for better decision making and development of resources. It is an important role in the strategic planning process of the corporation. 

Operational Business Intelligence

  • According to Real-time Business Intelligence, System business intelligence (OBI) provides an intermediate step towards meeting the strategic needs address data warehousing and tactical decision making that EAI addresses. The OBI system provides an event database is updated regularly. As a basis of historical data, the event log review and meet strategic requirements. With regular updates, strategic decision making expands the information on a daily which is used immediately to take action to solve a problem immediately.

Real-time Business Intelligence
  •  According to Real-time Business Intelligence, Real-time business intelligence (RTBI) is a system that responds in real time, a business intelligence system to react to events as they occur. We present an architecture who allows enterprises to actively respond in real time with events as they occur rather than reactively at a later time when that happened. Data latency and data unavailability is two primary impediments of real-time business intelligence. Data Latency is the staleness of data because the value of data takes down rapidly with its age. Data Unavailability is the ending for real-time business intelligence. If the company's operations have progressed to the point where they are dependent on real-time business intelligence, no intelligence from a system failure can bring the operation to stop.
