Information systems in business processes management

Here is the link defining Information systems in business processes management , cited through Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_systems
What is information system (IS) ?

A system is a group of components that act together to accomplish some purpose. An information system (IS) is a group of components that interact to generate information. A model of the components of an information system is called five-component framework. This model includes: computer hardware, software,  data,  procedures and people.

What is business processes management (BPM)?
Business processes management (BPM) is the systematic process of creating, assessing, and altering business processes.

It has four stages: model processes, create components, implement processes and assess results.

What role do information systems play in Business Processes?

They execute process activities. Some of those information systems are completely manual (they have data, procedures, and people components); some are completely automated (they have hardware, software, and data components); and some are mixture, meaning they have all five components of an information system- hardware, software, data, procedures, and people.

Example:

Implementing the “Register Clients” activity.

1st alternative.

It is possible to achieve this activity completely with human recourses department, with a system that is totally computer based, or with a system that is a hybrid of human and computer recourses. In this case, the trip scheduler gathers data from clients, determines trip availability, and collects payments. Then, when it is time to ship the product, the trip scheduler uses a word processing program to get ready documents specifying the client list and special requests lists.

2nd alternative.

It is possible to use a spreadsheet application to record clients and special requests as well as prepare client list. In this case, the trip scheduler manually collects data from clients, determines trip availability, and collects payments. Once the list is done, the spreadsheet application produces the roster and special equipment outputs.

3rd alternative.

Also, it is possible to create an entirely automated system. In this case, clients connects via Internet and use a Web site to register for a trip. They enter credit card information for payment on the site and record any special requests. The system prepares the client roster and special requests outputs.

In all three alternatives, the “Register Clients” activity is performed by an information system.
